PITTSBURGH—University of Pittsburgh student-athlete Luca Augustine was honored as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week after his dominating performances to win an individual gold medal at the 2022 Under-20 Pan American Championships in Oaxtepec, Mexico.
Augustine triumphed in the 79-kilogram freestyle wrestling tournament in Mexico on Sunday, taking U20 Pan Am gold thanks to four consecutive shutout victories by technical fall and earning the title of Outstanding Wrestler of the U20 Pan Am Championships.
The talented Pitt wrestler, who redshirted last season in his first year with the Panthers, defeated Brazil's Guilherme Barros de Arruda Porto (10-0), Mexico's Miguel Lavielle Ramirez (10-0), Colombia's Juan Cardozo Ibata (10-0) and Canada's Connor Church (11-0) during his flawless tournament.
Augustine's success was the latest highlight in a run of triumphs by Pitt wrestlers in freestyle competition. The Waynesburg, Pa., product was crowned the United States U20 freestyle champion earlier this year, while Pitt's Cole Matthews and Nino Bonaccorsi have won USA U23 titles recently while competing for the Pittsburgh Wrestling Club.
Following his redshirt season, Augustine is expected to compete for the starting spot at 174 pounds for the Panthers in 2022-23. Matthews (141 pounds) and Bonaccorsi (197 pounds) also return as national contenders in their respective weight classes, as does Micky Phillippi at 133 pounds.
Following a summer of freestyle success and exciting news surrounding the Pitt wrestling program, including a contract extension for head coach Keith Gavin through at least the 2027 season, the Panthers will now turn their attention to preparing for the upcoming season with a dual schedule set to be released in the coming weeks.
