PITTSBURGH -- In June, ESPN and The Walt Disney Company launched their "Fifty/50 Month" initiative, a wide-ranging content plan focused on the intersection of women, sports, culture, and the fight for equality. In an early piece titled " Sports Legacies Title IX Created", Pitt Director of Athletics Heather Lyke and her family were one of seven families profiled to discuss the multigenerational, maternal lineages they've built over the past 50 years.
It began with her mother, Marilyn, playing the only two varsity sports (field hockey and basketball) offered at Otterbein College from 1959-63, before Heather Lyke made her mark as a softball standout at Michigan (1988-92). Now a third generation of her family will carve out a path in college athletics with her daughter Sophie, a two-time All-Pennsylvania selection, a part of the 2022 Clemson Volleyball recruiting class.
