PITTSBURGH—Two members of the University of Pittsburgh wrestling program were honored as 2022 Scholar All-Americans, the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) recently announced.
Micky Phillippi and Jake Wentzel each received NWCA Scholar All-America status for the third consecutive year after excelling in the classroom and on the mat.
Both Pitt graduates, Phillippi and Wentzel, each spent the past year studying management in Pitt's prestigious Katz Graduate School of Business. Both possessing undergraduate and graduate grade-point averages well above a 3.0 standard, Phillippi owns his bachelor's degree in communication, while Wentzel received his undergraduate degree in accounting and business information systems.
A native of Derry, Pa., Phillippi completed another stellar season on the mat in 2021-22. He posted an 18-8 record and qualified for the NCAA Championships for the fourth consecutive campaign and advanced to the Round of 12 again, becoming a four-time ACC finalist at 133 pounds as well. He does have another season of eligibility remaining.
Wentzel, the pride of South Park, Pa., exhausted his eligibility with his sixth season this year and cemented his status as one of the most accomplished wrestlers in Pitt history. A former NCAA finalist and All-American, Wentzel went 19-7 in his final season and became Pitt's first three-time ACC champion. Now a three-time NWCA Scholar All-American in addition to his status as an ACC Wrestler Scholar Athlete of the Year and his triumphs on the mat, Wentzel goes down as an exemplary student-athlete who captained the Panthers twice and made history under head coach Keith Gavin.
