PITTSBURGH—The promotional dates and themes for Pitt Football's 2022 home schedule have been announced for the Panthers' seven home contests on the North Shore this fall.
Pitt returns several All-ACC players from last year's Atlantic Coast Conference championship-winning squad and could be primed for another title run in head coach Pat Narduzzi's eighth season.
The 2022 home slate includes two of the most enticing nonconference matchups of the college football season – West Virginia and Tennessee – in addition to an ACC schedule that features challenging games against Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Syracuse and Duke. Narduzzi will also get to face his alma mater, Rhode Island, in the first meeting between the Rams and Panthers in football.
Here are the promotional dates for the Panthers' highly anticipated 2022 football season:
Thursday, September 1: Pitt vs. West Virginia
The Backyard Brawl is back on the schedule for the Panthers and Mountaineers after an 11-year absence, with one of college football's great rivalries set to open the season on Thursday, Sept. 1 in front of a big crowd at the game and millions watching ESPN's Week 1 showcase opener.
The 105th all-time meeting between Pitt and West Virginia in football will kick off in primetime under the lights as the first Backyard Brawl since 1996 to open a season for the historic foes. As is traditional, Labor Day weekend also marks the return of the annual Heinz Field Kickoff and Rib Festival outside the stadium throughout the first weekend of September.
Saturday, September 10: Pitt vs. Tennessee
The Panthers welcome a Southeastern Conference opponent to Pittsburgh for the first time ever as the Tennessee Volunteers come north for the second Johnny Majors Classic of a two-game home-and-home agreement between the two programs forever connected by the legendary coach.
Pitt won a thrilling game in Knoxville last season and will once again hope to turn a Tennessee tilt into a quality out-of-conference victory on national television. Fans attending the game can expect to see a list of prominent Pitt greats who played for Majors in his two stints as the program's head coach, while the Majors family will also be honored as Pitt and Tennessee come together to recognize the historic football figure who made history at both schools during his impactful playing and coaching career.
The game is also Education Day, with educators available to receive discounted tickets and more.
Saturday, September 24: Pitt vs. Rhode Island
Pitt concludes its 2022 nonconference slate when the Panthers host Rhode Island at the end of September for its first matchup with the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) team.
Narduzzi meeting his alma mater, where played linebacker at from 1987-89, will be the headline leading into the game, which is also Family Weekend as relatives of Pitt students are encouraged to attend.
Saturday, October 1: Pitt vs. Georgia Tech
The 2021 ACC champions officially begin the defense of their title in 2022 when Georgia Tech makes its first trip to Pittsburgh since 2018 to begin the month of October.
Pitt fans will be encouraged to Roc the Royal and wear blue for the showdown with the Yellow Jackets as the Panthers seek a fifth straight win over the Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech.
The first Saturday in October will be Band Day and First Responders Day at Heinz Field, with local marching bands invited to the game while emergency personnel can purchase discounted tickets.
Saturday, October 8: Pitt vs. Virginia Tech
The 2022 University of Pittsburgh Homecoming is slated for Oct. 8 when the Panthers renew ties with Virginia Tech in what is always an important contest in the ACC's Coastal Division.
Annually one of the most anticipated dates of the University's calendar, this year's Homecoming ends a stretch of five home games in six weeks and could prove pivotal for Pitt's quest for another ACC title.
The matchup with the Hokies is also Healthcare Day as local medical professionals will be offered discounted seats through the Pitt ticketing office.
Saturday, November 5: Pitt vs. Syracuse
After nearly a month away from home, Pitt opens November with another showdown against Syracuse, a team that the Panthers have played in football each season since 1955.
The game between the long-time Eastern rivals will serve as Military Appreciation Day in the lead up to Veteran's Day as Pitt honors those who have and are currently serving with discounted tickets and special gameday experiences available for them and their families.
The contest with the Orange will also be Spirit Day and Youth Sports Day. Local school students can participate in a pregame clinic hosted by Pitt's varsity cheer and spirit team along with a discounted ticket to the game, while local youth teams and organizations can purchase discounted tickets with an opportunity for pregame on-field access as well.
Saturday, November 19: Pitt vs. Duke
The final home game of Pitt's football season will once again be Senior Day, with the Panthers to honor a championship-winning group before the game against Duke.
Pitt has risen to the Senior Day stage in recent years and created some incredible moments, notably upsetting undefeated Miami in 2017, pummeling Virginia Tech in 2020 and clinching the Coastal against Virginia in 2021 in front of an emotional home crowd.
Panther Club Appreciation Day will also be held at the home finale.
