Pitt's Luca Augustine Crowned U20 Freestyle National Champion

PITTSBURGH—University of Pittsburgh wrestling student-athlete Luca Augustine was crowned the Under-20 freestyle national champion at 79 kilograms this past weekend during the United States Open in Las Vegas.
Augustine, who will be a redshirt freshman for the Panthers next season after posting a 12-5 record during his true freshman campaign, stormed to the title with a high-scoring tournament, including a 13-4 victory in the final.
With the U20 national title crown, the Waynesburg, Pa., native earned a chance to compete for a place on the 2022 Team USA Junior World Team. He will wrestle a U20 best-of-three series in Geneva, Ohio from June 3-5 for a place on the team.
Pitt and the Pittsburgh Wrestling Club were also represented in Las Vegas by several senior wrestlers, including returning NCAA All-American Cole Matthews, who placed eighth at 65 kilograms.
Former Pitt wrestler Demetrius Thomas took fourth at 125 kilograms, as did current Pitt volunteer assistant coach Luke Pletcher at 65 kilos.
Pittsburgh Wrestling Club athlete Nico Megaludis won the senior national title at 61 kilograms in Las Vegas.
