Lacrosse, Baseball Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Paulina DiFatta of lacrosse and Matt Gilbertson of baseball were named the Pitt Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
In just two games at the 2022 ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship, DiFatta wrote her name in the record book. First, she set the single-game ACC Championship saves record with 19 in Wednesday's win over Louisville. The Panthers won 13-10 and needed DiFatta's herculean effort to guide them to victory. She added three ground balls and a caused turnover to go along with her all-time effort in the net. In the quarterfinals against No. 1 North Carolina, DiFatta continued right where she left off, with 14 first half saves to tie the ACC Championship tournament record (33). She added four in the second half to set the standard at 37 and also recorded two ground balls to contribute to her ACC-leading total. DiFatta leads the ACC in saves (198), saves per game (10.42), ground balls (51) and ground balls per game (2.68).
Gilbertson threw an eight-inning complete game and a two-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts and no walks in the Panthers' win over North Carolina A&T. The 12 strikeouts tied an individual Charles L. Cost Field record. Gilbertson has not allowed a walk in his last 41.2 innings pitched.
