Gymnastics, Baseball Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Hallie Copperwheat of gymnastics and Billy Corcoran of baseball were named the Pitt Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
As one of two Panthers to qualify for a 2022 NCAA Gymnastics Regional meet, Copperwheat made her collegiate postseason debut in Raleigh, N.C., Thursday. The Leighton Buzzard, England, native was the first Panther since Katie O'Rourke in 2014 to qualify on more than one event as an individual specialist, competing on both the uneven bars and balance beam. The freshman recorded a 9.850 on bars to tie for fifth overall and a 9.800 on beam.
Corcoran threw the first complete game of his career in baseball's series-clinching 6-3 victory over No. 5 Louisville, which was the Panthers' second-straight series win over a ranked ACC team (then-No. 20 Clemson last week) and first over the Cardinals in ACC play. Corcoran tied a career high with nine strikeouts, allowed no walks and just four hits and retired the side in seven innings.
