PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling program recently received a boost to its future lineup with the signings of Holden Heller and Reece Heller, with the pair of brothers set to join the Panthers for the 2022-23 season as transfers from Hofstra University.
Holden Heller, the 2021 EIWA champion at 157 pounds, comes to Pittsburgh as a redshirt senior with two years of athletic eligibility left. He started for Hofstra each of his first three seasons with the Pride, culminating in an outstanding 2021 campaign that resulted in a conference title and automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships.
Holden was also a NWCA Scholar All-American and three-time EIWA Academic Achievement Award recipient and his 2021 campaign was one of the best individual seasons on the mat in Hofstra history.
Reece Heller will join the Panthers as a redshirt junior with three seasons of eligibility remaining. He started for Hofstra as a true freshman in 2019-20, posting a 19-13 record and competing at 149 pounds at the EIWA Championships. His overall collegiate record stands at 33-18 as he begins his Pitt career.
The Heller brothers are originally from Chicago Heights, Ill., and attended Marian Catholic High School. Both were multiple-time state place winners in Illinois during their prep careers.
Pitt wrestling is coming off a second straight top-25 finish at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, with previous NCAA All-Americans Cole Matthews and Nino Bonaccorsi returning for the Panthers under head coach Keith Gavin, who will be entering his sixth season at the helm of his alma mater.
