PITTSBURGH – Sidney Washington of gymnastics and Jake Wentzel of wrestling were named the Pitt Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
In Sunday's dual meet versus No. 24 Towson Washington had a dominant performance, taking home the all-around for the second time this season with a career-high 39.475. The Ann Arbor, Mich., native recorded a career high on beam (9.875) and tied her career-best scores on bars (9.850) and floor (9.900). The freshman's efforts on beam assisted in the Panthers breaking the program beam record for the third time this season with a team score of 49.350. Washington took home three individual titles (T-BB: 9.875, FX: 9.900, AA: 39.475) on the night.
Wentzel made Pitt wrestling history on Sunday at the 2022 ACC Championships, becoming the program's first three-time champion in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The super senior from South Park, Pa., completed his ACC three-peat at 165 pounds in dominant fashion. The top seed, Wentzel shut out Virginia Tech's Clayton Ulrey 3-0 in the semifinal before defeating Justin McCoy of Virginia 7-0 in the final with one of his best performances of the season.
It was the second straight year that Wentzel won the ACC title without conceding a point. The returning All-American and national finalist will make his last career appearance at the NCAA Championships next weekend. He enters the 2022 national tournament with a 16-5 record this season.
Wentzel was one of three Panthers to earn 2022 ACC titles on Sunday. Cole Matthews won his first conference championship at 141 pounds, while Nino Bonaccorsi repeated at 197 pounds. Pitt improved as a team to finish third in the league with 51.0 points, and at least six Panthers will compete at the 2022 NCAA Championships in Detroit from March 17-19.
