
Panthers Fall at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Pitt men's basketball team dropped a road conference matchup to Virginia Tech, 74-47, Monday evening at the Cassell Coliseum.
It was the second of back-to-back games against the Hokies, who prevailed 76-71 at the Petersen Events Center Saturday evening.
Sophomore Femi Odukale led the Panthers with 16 points while tallying four assists and two steals. Graduate student Mouhamadou Gueye had 15 points - all from three pointers (5) - and blocked four shots and gathered four boards.
Both teams started slow on the offensive end with Pitt (8-16, 3-10 ACC) leading 3-0 after four minutes of action. Virginia Tech (14-10, 6-7 ACC) responded from its slow start by making four of five three pointers and scoring 16-straight points to take a 16-5 lead at the under 12 media timeout.
The Hokies made six three pointers in total in the first half and compiled 21 rebounds as a team. The Panthers made four three pointers, all coming from Gueye, who ended the half with 12 points, two rebounds and two blocks as Pitt trailed 35-17 at the break.
Pitt shot 27.3% (6-22) from the field and attempted only two free throws in the first 20 minutes.
Despite shooting 50% in the second half and 66.7% from deep, the Panthers could not cut into the lead like they did 48 hours earlier in Pittsburgh and trailed by double-digits for the entirety of the half.
For the game, Pitt shot 37.5% (15-40) from the floor and 50% (10-20) from long range.
Pitt stays on the road and travels to Tallahassee, Fla., to take on Florida State Wednesday, Feb. 9. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. on the ACC Network.
