
Van der Laan Wins Third Career ACC Medal in Day Four of Championships

ATLANTA, Ga. — Senior Cooper Van der Laan became only the third Pitt swimming and diving student-athlete to earn three career ACCs medals in day four of the ACC Championships at the McCauley Aquatic Center.
Van der Laan scored his second consecutive bronze medal in the 100 Breast with a time of 51.64, earning bronze medals at the 2021 ACC Championships in the 100 Breast (51.52) and 200 Breast (1:52.76). The Gold Coast, Australia native joins Blaise Vera and Dominic Giordano with the honor.
Overall, the Pitt had seven swimmers and divers make finalists Friday night – three in the 100 Breast, three in the 200 Fly and one on men's platform.
Junior Flynn Crisci earned eighth overall in the men's 100 Breast A Final with a new personal best of 52.67, followed by junior Jerry Chen who also achieved a new career-best 52.78 in the B Final, securing 13th place in the event. The trio of Van der Laan, Crisci, and Chen boosted the men's team score by 63 points.
In the 200 Fly, Daisy Anderson finished 24th overall in the women's 200 Fly Finals, touching the wall in the C Final at 2:00.84 and picking up a point for the women's team. Junior Adam Mahler earned himself a new PR in the B Final, touching in at 1:43.77, coming up just short of breaking the school record (1:43.58). Senior Serhii Ahadzhanian swam a season-best 1:45.95 in the C Final to place 23rd overall.
Freshman Cameron Cash made his second finals appearance in his ACC debut on men's platform, earning a new personal best of 363.40 and sixth place. All four men's divers earned points for the team on platform with Dylan Reed (15th, 280.90), Jackson Salisbury (22nd, 251.40), Josh Parquet, and Cash combining to earn 40 points for the men's team.
Junior Marcin Goraj (47.73) and Austin Lane (47.88) placed 25th and 26th in the men's 100 back to be the first and second alternates, with Goraj earning a NCAA B Standard Cut.
Also swimming for the Panthers today, freshmen Trent Russano (1:48.00, 24th) and Sydney Rodriguez (2:00.56, 30th) secured personal bests in the 200 Fly, freshman Krzysztof Radziszewski finished 28th in the 100 Back (48.05), followed by senior Stephen Hopta in 30th (48.31), and in the women's 100 Breast, juniors Tatum Detwiler (1:02.83) and Kate Fuhrmann (1:03.66) finished 29th and 33rd respectively.
The men's team currently ranks eighth with 361 points, while the women sit in eleventh place with 210.
The ACC Championships will conclude tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 18 with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. followed by finals at 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tomorrow's events will include the 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 400 Free Relay, and women's platform diving.
The entire 2022 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships, including both prelims and finals, will be broadcast on ACCNX and the ESPN+ app.
