
Panthers Move to 2-0 in ACC With 84-82 Win At Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior forward Blake Hinson scored a game-high 25 points and 13 rebounds, while Nelly Cummings added 22 points and six assists to secure an 84-82 conference win over Syracuse Tuesday night at the JMA Wireless Dome. Pitt opened conference play with a 2-0 record for the first time since the 2015-16 season.
Hinson and Cummings combined for 47 points, shooting for a combined 51.6 percent (16-of-31) from the field. Cummings went 6-of-11 from beyond the arc, including making four threes in the first half. The Midland, Pa., native matched his career-high in three-point field goals (6).
Greg Elliott contributed 12 points and seven rebounds for his eighth double-figure scoring game of the season. Jamarius Burton and Jorge Diaz Graham each added nine points.
Pitt jumped out to a 41-33 lead at the half as the offense proved to have the hot hand from deep. The Panthers knocked down eight three-point field goals and shot 53.3 percent (16-of-30) overall from the field before the break. Pitt's defense stepped up, holding Syracuse to just 1-of-12 from three-point range and 13-of-31 from the field.
The Panthers used a 16-2 run to take a 25-14 lead at the 9:40 minute mark. Pitt hit four three pointers during the run, including Cummings knocking down two back-to-back treys.
Pitt picked up right where they left off, beginning the second half with a 6-0 run off Burton and Elliott threes. The Panthers held a double-digit lead, by as much as 20 points, until the five minutes left in the game. Syracuse cut the deficit to seven points after Quadir Copeland knocked down a three and drew a foul.
Syracuse began to gain momentum with two clutch Joe Girard three. Girard made a three-pointer with :30 seconds remaining to put the Orange within one point. Hinson secured the win for with a steal and a made free throw to give the Panthers the advantage in the final seconds.
Judah Mintz led Syracuse with 24 points and five rebounds, while Girard added 16 points and five assists.
