PITTSBURGH—The Pitt wrestling program reeled in another ACC Wrestler of the Week honor when Holden Heller was honored by the conference on Tuesday afternoon.
Heller, a transfer from Hofstra who has excelled as Pitt's starter at 165 pounds this season, becomes the third Pitt wrestler of the young campaign to be honored with the ACC's weekly award.
Nino Bonaccorsi and James Lledo were previously honored by the league office this season.
Heller's recognition comes after his crucial 4-2 decision over No. 12 Joshua Ogunsanya on Sunday helped the No. 20 Panthers (4-1) clinch a 19-18 dual victory at Columbia.
The win, which featured a second-period takedown by Heller and a lengthy ride-out to end the frame, vaulted Heller up to No. 16 in InterMat's weekly individual rankings at 165 pounds, ahead of Ogunsanya.
The redshirt senior from Riverwoods, Ill., who still has another season of eligibility remaining, improved his record to 4-1 in his first season wrestling for Pitt head coach Keith Gavin and the Panthers.
After final exams and a few weeks away from action, Pitt will send numerous wrestlers to the 2022 Midlands Championships near Chicago for the prestigious midseason tournament.
The 20th-ranked Panthers resume dual action with an exciting start to 2023, hosting the Backyard Brawl against rival West Virginia at Fitzgerald Field House on Sunday, Jan. 8 at 2 p.m.
