Sophie Yendell Breaks 50 Free School Record at Minnesota Invite

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Pittsburgh women's swimming team sends 10 swimmers to the finals during day two of the Minnesota Invite, Thursday night.
Junior Sophie Yendell swam a 22.34 in the 50-yard free, breaking the Pitt School Record this morning at the preliminaries and matched her time tonight at finals. She broke the record she set a year ago and placed third overall the evening.
In the 500-yard free finals, Jacqueline Tinneny finished 14th with a time of 4:49.62 which was a drop from her morning swim (4:51.40). This was a personal record for Tinneny. Tessa Mock (4:57.59), Emily Bucaro (4:56.45), and Abby Licht (4:56.59) finished 24th, 28th and 29th.
Angelina Messina, Yasmine Safargar and Tatum Detwiler all dropped time in finals of the 200-yard IM. Messina (2:03.59) took 28th with Safargar (2:03.80) right behind in 29th, and Detwiler (2:04.25) finished 31st.
The Panthers continued with three individual qualifiers in the 50 free: Yendell, Kate Fuhrmann and Janelle Schulz. In addition to Yendell claiming third overall in both the preliminaries and finals, Kate Fuhrmann (22.98) took 21st and Janelle Schulz (23.49) finished 31st in the finals.
Finishing the evening strong, the 200-yard free relay team of Yendell, Fuhrmann, Schulz and Detwiler claimed an eighth-place overall finish with a time of 1:31.19. Maddie London, Claire Jansen, Sophie Knepper and Kate Bailey finished in 12th-place (1:33.66).
The Panthers will return tomorrow for the third day of the four-day meet. Preliminary events are set to begin at 11 a.m. ET with the final events slated for 7 p.m. ET. The top-32 finishers in the preliminary events will advance to the finals.
