PITTSBURGH – Junio forward William Jeffress underwent surgery on his left foot Thursday morning. Jeffress has been sidelined since early September when the injury was initially diagnosed.
"Will was having a terrific offseason prior to suffering the foot injury and we were hopeful that rest and rehab would enable him to avoid the surgery," said head coach Jeff Capel. "When the discomfort in his foot remained following an extended time off, we knew it would be in his best interest to go through with the surgery. We expect Will to make a full recovery and come back stronger than ever next season."
The Erie, Pa., native is averaging 3.0 points and 2.9 rebounds per game in 47 career contests (20 starts) as a Panther. He has shown to be a versatile defender with good rebounding instincts in his first two seasons. Jeffress, a two-time All-ACC Academic Team selection, graduated high school early and was one of the youngest freshmen in the country during the 2020-21 season.
Jeffress averaged 3.3 points and 3.3 rebounds in just over 20 minutes per game while starting 16 of 31 games played a year ago.
Over the summer, Jeffress went on a foreign trip to Greece with USA East Coast Basketball, where he averaged 11.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in helping lead the team to a 3-0 record.
Jeffress is expected to receive a medical redshirt and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
