Panthers Deliver 80-58 Season Opening Win Over UT Martin

PITTSBURGH – Pitt opened the 2022-23 season with one of its top defensive performances under head coach Jeff Capel and newcomer Blake Hinson posted career highs with 27 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Panthers to an 80-56 win over UT Martin Monday night at the Petersen Events Center.
Four Panthers scored in double figures as Federiko Federiko (13), Greg Elliott (11), and Jamarius Burton (10) joined Hinson in the double digit column. Pitt did an excellent job sharing the ball throughout the game recording 21 assists on 26 made field goals. The Panthers recorded assists on seven of their first eight baskets in the second half to break open the game.
UT Martin shot just 32.3 percent (20-of-62) from the field, including 3-of-19 (.158) from three-point range. The Panthers forced 17 turnovers and had a 25-13 edge in points of turnovers for the game.
Pitt used a 26-16 run over the final 10:34 of the opening half to open up a 37-24 halftime lead. Hinson knocked down a pair of three-pointers and added a three-point play en route to 11 first half points as the Panthers recovered from a slow start from the field. After starting 1-of-10 from beyond the arc, Pitt knocked down four threes during the first half run.
The Panthers three-point stroke carried through halftime as Elliott buried a pair of deep balls and Cummings added a four-point play to help push the lead to 17 at the first media timeout of the second half.
UT Martin trimmed the deficit to 14 on a corner three by Desmond Williams at the 14:20 mark but it also proved costly as Parker Stewart was assessed a pair of flagrant 1 fouls and was ejected for the game after an altercation under the basket that carried out to midcourt.
Pitt responded with a 20-3 run over the next eight minutes to go ahead 71-40 with 6:20 left in the contest. Hinson had 12 points during the deciding run with a pair of three-point field goals, four free throws and a break away dunk.
The Panthers extended the lead to 33 points with 3:31 remaining before UT Martin closed on a 10-0 run to trim the final deficit to 22 points. KJ Simon was the lone double-figure scorer for UT Martin with 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting.
Pitt returns to action Friday, Nov. 11 at the Petersen Events Center in the 189th playing of the Backyard Brawl against West Virginia (7 p.m. – ACC Network Extra).

Hinson became the fourth Pitt player since the 1986-87 season to register 25 or more points and 10 or more rebounds in a season opener ... John Hugley IV accomplished the feat last season, while Michael Young (11/11/16) and Brian Shorter (11/28/89) also topped those marks in a season opener.
