PITTSBURGH – Football's Jared Wayne, Valeria Vazquez Gomez from Volleyball and Men's Soccer's Bertin Jacquesson have all been named PNC Achievers of the Week following some late season and postseason heroics over the last week.
Jared Wayne posted career highs of 11 catches for 199 yards and three touchdowns. His initial TD was a career-long 66 yards, followed by scores of 26 and seven yards. Wayne's production against the Hurricanes gave him a personal-best 1,006 receiving yards for the year, making him only the eighth player in Pitt history to achieve a 1,000-yard receiving season. Wayne was also named the Pro Football Focus National Team of the Week for his performance. Winners of four consecutive games, the Panthers (8-4) will learn their bowl destination this Sunday, Dec. 4.
Vazquez Gomez delivered her best performance as a Panther in Pitt's thrilling five-set victory over No. 13 Georgia Tech in the Petersen Events Center on Wednesday. The Puerto Rico native recorded a career-high in kills (22) and service aces (3) while notching her fourth double-double of the season (14 digs) and a pair of blocks. Her efficiency was remarkable, making her 22 kills on .347 hitting, including a masterful fifth set in which she posted five kills on eight swings without committing an error (.625 hitting) to help Pitt erase a 10-5 deficit to win the final set, 19-17.
She was instrumental in securing a share of the 2022 ACC Championship for Pitt this week, stuffing the stat sheet with 33 kills on .375 hitting to go along with five aces (.63/set), 19 digs (2.38/set) and two blocks for a total of 4.94 points/set in wins over No. 13 Georgia Tech and Boston College.
Vazquez Gomez and the Panthers will hope to keep the positive momentum going into the NCAA Tournament this weekend. The NCAA Selection committee announced Pitt as a No. 2 seed in the tournament last night. As a Top 16 team in the field, Pitt will host No. 7 seed BYU, Colgate and James Madison in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament inside the Petersen Events Center on Dec. 2 and 3.
Bertin Jacquesson continued his high-level of play in the Panthers NCAA Championship Third Round upset of #1 Kentucky as he netted the game-winning goal in the 87th minute despite playing down a man for the final 15+ minutes of the match. The junior broke free at the top of the box and ripped a hard bending shot into the upper left corner of the net to help the Panthers defeat the previously unbeaten and overall #1 seeded Wildcats on their home turf.
Jacquesson finished his night with a team-high three shots and the game-winner. He now has eight goals, four assists and 20 points on the season including seven points (three goals, one assist) in the three NCAA Tournament matches. With his goal Sunday, the Frenchman moved into seventh place on the Panthers' all-time scoring list with 60 career points.
