PITTSBURGH—University of Pittsburgh wrestling team super senior Nino Bonaccorsi has been named the ACC Wrestler of the Week for the fifth time in his Pitt career, the conference announced Tuesday.
Bonaccorsi shared the ACC weekly honor with Virginia Tech's Connor Brady after an excellent and historic weekend on the mat for Pitt's starter at 197 pounds.
The Bethel Park, Pa., native won both of his matches in Pitt's home doubleheader on Friday and Saturday against Maryland and No. 13 Lehigh, taking down top-15 individuals in both of his bouts.
Bonaccorsi didn't just beat No. 13 Jaxon Smith and No. 8 Michael Beard, however; he convincingly came out on top with high-scoring displays, earning an 8-2 decision over Smith and a 10-4 win over Beard.
The win over Smith marked Nino's 100th individual win of his outstanding collegiate career at Pitt that includes NCAA All-America and NWCA All-America honors as well as two ACC titles.
His triumph over Beard helped the Panthers (2-1) knock off the Mountain Hawks with a 22-12 dual win in front of a frenzied home crowd at Fitzgerald Field House.
Now 3-0 on the season with three straight lopsided victories, Bonaccorsi moved up to No. 8 at 197 pounds in this week's InterMat individual rankings.
Keith Gavin's squad, ranked No. 17 in the NWCA Coaches Poll this week, are off this weekend but will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 3 for a 4 p.m. dual at Big Ten program Illinois.
