PITTSBURGH – Nino Bonaccorsi of wrestling, women's basketball's Liatu King and Bertin Jacquesson have all been named PNC Achievers of the Week as the athletics calendar crosses over between fall postseason and winter season contests.
Pitt's Nino Bonaccorsi posted two top-15 wins in dominating fashion over the weekend – and made history by earning the 100th victory of his outstanding career in Pittsburgh. Competing at 197 pounds, Bonaccorsi topped No. 13 Jaxon Smith of Maryland by 8-2 decision on Friday night to reach the century mark for college wins. Then Bonaccorsi, ranked No. 9 by InterMat last week, convincingly knocked off No. 8 Michael Beard of Lehigh with a 10-4 decision on Saturday night, helping the No. 17 Panthers earn a 22-12 dual victory over the No. 13 Mountain Hawks in a traditional in-state rivalry.
King capped a huge week for the Panthers with back-to-back double-doubles as Pitt secured home victories over Bryant and Duquesne. The junior finished the week averaging a team-high 17.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks while shooting 62.5% from the floor across the two wins. In Wednesday's win over Bryant, King recorded her first double-double of the season as she netted 10 points and a season-high 14 rebounds while going 5-for-7 from the floor in the dominant 93-54 School Day win for Pitt. On Saturday night, King shined for the Panthers in the City Game against rival Duquesne as she recorded her second straight double-double with a career-high 25 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks while going 10-for-17 from the floor. King is one of three players in the ACC averaging a double-double on the season as she leads Pitt in scoring (12.8 ppg) and rebounding (10.8 rpg).
Jacquesson finished off his huge week for the Panthers leading the squad to a pair of NCAA Tournament victories as Pitt advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third straight year. The junior finished off his week with two goals, an assist and five points across the wins over Cleveland State and No. 16 Akron. He started his week with a pair of goals while leading the squad with four shots in the NCAA Tournament First Round win over Cleveland State. Jacquesson backed up that performance with an assist on Pitt's third goal while also drawing a penalty kick that resulted in Valentin Noel's second penalty kick goal of the match. Pitt earned the 3-0 second round victory to move on to face No. 1 Kentucky Sunday at 6pm in Lexington. On the year, Jacquesson has netted seven goals, three assists and 17 points. With his assist Sunday, Jacquesson now ranks second in program history with 22 career assists.
