PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's swimming and diving team won 16 of 19 events to defeat George Washington 241-112 early Saturday afternoon at Trees Pool.
"Our women's team did a great job of racing tough from start to finish this meet, said head coach Chase Kreitler. "We are coming out of a very good 12-week training block through the fall semester and our group is definitely carrying some fatigue from that. This meet was a chance to race George Washington, the defending Atlantic 10 Championship program who have a lot of good swimmers and also get to mix up some races and see our team race events we haven't seen this fall. The team is really looking forward to getting some rest heading into Minnesota Invite and racing in tech suits."
The Panthers continued their momentum into the second day of competition, winning the first four events. The 200-yard relay team of Claire Jansen, Tatum Detwiler, Sophie Yendell and Kate Fuhrmann took first with a time of 1:43.53. Another Pitt relay team consisting of Holly Pringle, Angelina Messina, Kate Bailey and Janelle Schulz 1:46.04 to take second place.
Taking first in the other three opening events was Jacqueline Tinneny in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:10.83); Yasemine Safargar in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.12) and Yendell in the 50-yard freestyle (23.27). Senior Kate Fuhrmann also contributed to Pitt's point total with a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (23.77).
Freshman Kate Bailey recorded her second individual first-place finish of the meet after claiming the top of the podium in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.44). Bailey also won the 100-yard butterfly (54.64) during the first day of competition.
Pitt dominated the 200-yard breaststroke with Detwiler (2:22.69), Messina (2:23.21), and Maddie London (2:23.71) sweeping the podium.
The women's 400-yard freestyle relay team capped off the meet with another top finish. Bailey, Jansen, Yendell, and Janelle Schulz swam for a combined time of 3:29.06.
The Pitt men's and women's swimming are back in action Nov. 30-Dec. 3 as the Panthers travel to Minneapolis, Minn., to compete in the Minnesota Invite.
