Pitt Women Impress Against George Washington

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's swimming posted impressive finishes during the first day of a two-day meet against George Washington, winning 7 of 8 events Friday night at Trees Pool.
Leading into the meet, the Panthers women's team was ahead of the Colonials 24-14 after a strong performance from the diving team a week ago. Sophomore Jess Vega helped propel the women's team with three first-place finishes and three new personal records in the platform, 1-meter and 3-meter events.
The Panthers started the meet off strong as the 400-yard medley relay teams claimed first and second-place finishes. The relay team of Claire Jansen, Tatum Detwiler, Kate Bailey and Sophie Yendell finished first with the time of 3:47.66. Holly Pringle, Angelina Messina, Olivia Yoo and Janelle Schulz came in second with the time of 3:51.44.
Other notable finishes included Emily Bucaro (4:58.52) and Jacqueline Tinneny (4:59.05) taking first and second place, respectively, in the 500-yard freestyle. The Panthers kept rolling as Pitt picked up another 1-2 finish in the 100-yard butterfly from Kate Bailey (first, 54.64) and Yoo (second, 56.64). Yasemine Safargar placed second overall with a 4:28.07 time in the 400-yard individual medley.
Jansen also contributed by taking first-place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.27), while Janelle Schulz claimed first in the 100-yard freestyle (52.08) and Detwiler earned first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.59).
The Pitt women's team enters the final day of the meet with a 132-54 lead against George Washington. The meet begins Saturday at 10 a.m. at Trees Pool.
