PITTSBURGH – Women's Soccer's Samiah Phiri and Courtney Buzzerio from Volleyball were named PNC Achievers of the Week as Pitt women's sports continued their historic fall season.
Sophomore forward Samiah Phiri lifted the No. 14-ranked Pitt women's soccer team (11-1-0, 4-0-0 ACC) to a 1-0 victory over Louisville Saturday at Ambrose Urbanic Field, scoring a header goal off a corner opportunity in the 79th minute. Phiri's goal marked her second in her first season as a Panther and her first game winner. Her late-game heroics helped Pitt run its winning streak to five in a row, keep its best overall start to a season in program history intact and open ACC play with four wins in four tries for the first time in program history.
Graduate senior Courtney Buzzerio solidified her role as the primary offensive weapon for Pitt volleyball (14-2, 4-0) this past week, delivering a team-high 45 kills on .391 hitting in three road victories over Virginia (3-1), Duke (3-0) and High Point (3-1). Buzzero continues to be the most reliable and efficient weapon on the roster as she made at least 3.33 kills/set while hitting .300 or better in all three matches, leading Pitt with 15, 10 and 20 kills respectively.
Buzzerio continues to lead the ACC in hitting percentage by a non-middle blocker at .343. She has the highest hitting percentage by any player in Power 5 with at least 190 kills this season, delivering 197 kills in 16 matches.
In her last match vs. High Point, Buzzerio set a season high with 20 kills. It was her sixth-career 20+ kill performance and first as a Panther, having transferred into the program this year after a four-year career at Iowa. Buzzerio was joined by Valeria Vazquez Gomez with 20 kills in Pitt's win over HPU, marking the first time in the Coach Dan Fisher era that two Panthers have made 20+ kills in the same match.
