Panthers To Host North Carolina Friday, Dec. 30

PITTSBURGH – Pitt will host North Carolina, ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Preseason Poll, Friday, Dec. 30 at the Petersen Events Center as announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference Friday morning. The game time will be determined at a later date.
The Panthers have won three of the past four meetings between the two schools, including a 76-67 win over the Tar Heels last season in Chapel Hill. Pitt used a 21-2 first half run to jump out to a 17-point (40-23) halftime lead in a road win over North Carolina. The 17-point margin at the half is tied for the third largest halftime deficit the Tar Heels have faced in the history of the Dean E. Smith Center. The Panthers made five consecutive three-point field goals during the 21-2 first half run and shot a season-best 60 percent (15-of-25) from the field in the opening 20 minutes of action.
Pitt will have its most experienced team under head coach Jeff Capel returning three starters including double-figure scorers John Hugley IV (14.8 ppg., 7.9 rpg.) and Jamarius Burton (12.4 ppg.). The Panthers rotation also features three other players who have averaged double-figures in scoring at the Division I level in Nelly Cummings, Nike Sibande, and Blake Hinson as well as Greg Elliott, who enters the season with 94 three-point field goals, while shooting over 40 percent from beyond the arc in his career.
Pitt opens the regular season Monday, Nov. 7 against UT Martin (7 p.m. – ACC Network Extra) at the Petersen Events Center.
