PONTEVEDRA, Spain—University of Pittsburgh senior Cole Matthews has arrived in Spain for his run at a world title at the 2022 U23 World Wrestling Championships in Pontevedra.
Following his Under-23 domestic national championship this past June, Matthews earned the chance to make his first USA Wrestling World Team. That dream is now realized as he will represent Team USA in the 65-kilogram freestyle division this weekend in Spain.
Freestyle action at 65 kilograms begins on Friday at 4:30 p.m. ET, with streaming coverage available live on FloWrestling with a subscription.
Matthews received his bracket this week ahead of the tournament. He earned a bye to the second round and will face either Belarussian or Georgian opposition in his first match.
This marks the second consecutive year that Pitt will be represented at the Under-23 World Wrestling Championships. Nino Bonaccorsi traveled to Serbia for the 2021 event.
Pitt head coach Keith Gavin has always stated that developing student-athletes to have the opportunity to compete on the international stage is one of his program's top priorities.
Now it is Matthews' turn to compete in Europe and try to make a name for himself on the freestyle wrestling scene internationally at a relatively young age.
Pitt wrestling season tickets are now on sale. Fans can secure their seats for all seven home matches to watch Matthews, Bonaccorsi and the rest of the Panthers compete during the 2022-23 season.
