PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh student-athletes Molly Carter, Camdyn O'Donnell and Abby Thorne have been named team captains of Pitt Lacrosse as announced by head coach Emily Boissonneault Thursday morning.
Carter and Thorne return from the inaugural team, although Carter was unable to play due to injury, and O'Donnell joined the Panthers from San Diego State University this summer.
"I couldn't be happier for Molly," Boissonneault said. "She has grown tremendously during her time here at Pitt and her teammates have noticed. Her positive voice at practice and relationships with teammates is appreciated and respected. We are excited to see her lead the team this season."
"I am extremely honored to be named a captain alongside Cam and Abby," Carter said. "While sidelined last year, I had the opportunity to grow my leadership skills off the field and cannot wait to carry them into this season on the field as well. This team is unbelievably special, with every single player buying into the culture that started even before our inaugural year. I will always be grateful to have another chance to lead and play with this team. To the best coaching staff in the ACC, thank you for believing in each and every one of us. 2023 is going to be an exceptional year, so stay tuned. H2P!"
Carter recorded 35 points with 16 goals and 19 assists in 29 career games (five starts) at Syracuse.
"Cam has made a huge impact on this team despite only transferring in this fall," said Boissonneault. "Since her arrival, she has made an effort to build meaningful relationships with everyone on this team, encourage growth, and push us to be the best on and off the field."
"It is an absolute privilege to be named a captain of the Pitt lacrosse 2022-2023 team," O'Donnell said. "Molly and Abby are incredible leaders that I get to stand next to. With the team being on the younger side this year, I am excited to use my experience to lead this group and I cannot wait to continue to develop the culture of this team further in year two. The goal is to continue building the great legacy that the inaugural year put into place. The job is far from over and we are ready, HAIL 2 PITT!"
O'Donnell totaled 33 goals, along with 17 assists at San Diego State. Last season, she was second on the team with 50 points and finished third in school history with seven goals in a single game.
"Abby has been a leader on this team since the moment she joined us," Boissonneault said. "She is one of our hardest workers and has the respect of each of her teammates. As a returning defensive starter, our team will rely on her problem solving and experience to lead our defensive unit this season."
"It is an honor to captain this team alongside Molly and Cam," said Thorne. "I had the privilege to be a part of not only the inaugural year but also the original 14. I am extremely excited to make an even bigger impact on this program through my leadership by continuing to build the traditions and culture of Pitt women's lacrosse and am thrilled to be a part of this legacy. As always, H2P."
Thorne appeared and started in all 18 games last season. She racked up 28 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers, good enough for third on the team in each category.
The Panthers return to fall play this weekend at Penn.
