PITTSBURGH – Volleyball's Courtney Buzzerio and Men's Soccer Luis Sahmkow were named PNC Achievers of the Week after leading the Panthers to success in both of their teams matches last week.
Sophomore Luis Sahmkow had a big week for the Panthers as he was able to net a pair of goals as Pitt went 1-0-1 on the week. Sahmkow came up big with the game-tying goal Monday night against #10 Denver as he calmly potted a penalty kick goal into the right corner to help Pitt earn the 2-2 draw. He finished off his night with a team-high three shots (two on goal) in 24 minutes off the bench.
On Friday night at Virginia Tech, Sahmkow once again came up big for the Panthers as he netted the game-winning goal in the 58th minute after assists by Valentin Noel and Filip Mirkovic. The sophomore netted goals in back-to-back games for the first time in his Pitt career. He has also established a new career-high with six points on the year.
Graduate senior Courtney Buzzerio added to her resume this weekend, delivering a pair of dominant matches in ACC play. She led Pitt to sweeps over Miami and Florida State, the Panthers' first double-sweep weekend of ACC play this season. Buzzerio made 28 kills on .407 hitting over the weekend, while also adding five aces and eight blocks (1.33 block/set).
Her 16 kills (5.33 kills/set) against Florida State was the most kills/set in a single match by any Panther since Kayla Lund in the 2020 fall season. She did so on .444 hitting, joining Lund (2020-21), Stephanie Williams (2017/16), Nika Markovic (2017), Kadi Kullerkann (2015) and Jessica Wynn (2013) as the only Panthers in the Dan Fisher era to collect multiple matches of 5+ kills/set and .400+ hitting in the same season.
