PITTSBURGH – The Pitt Women's Lacrosse team continued the fall competition schedule with an intersquad scrimmage Wednesday evening at Highmark Stadium. In a highly competitive back-and-forth affair, the Blue team used a 4-0 run over the final eight minutes of action to claim an 11-8 win.
"We are really focused this fall on making adjustments, and today was another opportunity to do that," said Head Coach Emily Boissonneault. "Although against ourselves, it provided an opportunity for us to challenge the girls and see how they can make those adjustments from last weekend. We focused on working together and being united on both the offensive and defensive ends."
Pitt had 12 different goal scorers on the night, while six players recorded assists. Camdyn O'Donnell, Jenna Hendrickson and Madigan Lublin each recorded hat tricks for Blue, while Rachel Familetti scored twice. The White team had eight different goal scorers with Sydney Naylor collecting three points (1G, 2A) to pace the offense.
The two teams combined for 49 shots in the game and were 38-of-39 on clear attempts. Hannah Van Middelem collected 11 saves for White with Molly Cain finishing with seven saves for Blue.
White opened the scoring as Talia Zuco found the back of the net less than two minutes into play. Blue countered with three consecutive goals as Jenna Hendrickson scored unassisted goals at the 10:01 and 8:20 mark. Madigan Lublin capped off the first quarter scoring at the 7:27 mark with a free position goal.
Christina DeNaples trimmed the White deficit to one with a goal at the 11:50 mark before Rachel Familetti doubled the Blue lead less than a minute later with a free position goal. Maeve Murray (White) and Camdyn O'Donnell (Blue) traded goals before Sydney Naylor assisted on goals by Maria Donahue (6:59) and Amelia Haywood (3:09) to send the game into halftime tied at 5-5.
White extended its goal streak to three in row at 11:57 in the third quarter as Donahue found a cutting Dylana Williams from behind the cage for a quick stick finish by the sophomore out of Canada. O'Donnell squared up the game at the 9:14 mark with a low angle skip into the back of the cage. Familetti gave Blue the lead with just over three minutes left in the third off a feed from Sammie Giroux, before Naylor retied the contest less than a minute later with her first goal of the night.
Cavanaugh gave the White squad an 8-7 lead with a man-up goal off a feed from Williams. Blue countered with the equalizer at the 7:39 mark as O'Donnell struck from the free position slot for her third goal of the night. O'Donnell fed Lublin just over a minute later for a 9-8 advantage and Hendrickson and Lublin found the back of the net at the 4:40 and 1:39 marks for the final margin.
