PITTSBURGH – Sophomore John Hugley joined elite company Saturday, becoming the 14th Panther (29th performance) in program history to record over 30 points and 10 rebounds, registering 32 points and 13 boards as Pitt defeated Boston College 69-67 at the Petersen Events Center.
Joining Hugley in double-figures was senior Jamarius Burton (14 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists) and sophomore Femi Odukale (11 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists).
Hugley became the fourth Panther since 2009 to achieve a 30/10 game, joining Justin Champagnie, Sam Young and DeJuan Blair.
After Boston College (6-7, 1-2 ACC) went into the first media timeout with a 7-2 lead, Pitt (6-9, 1-3 ACC) orchestrated an 8-0 that included two three-pointers from Hugley and graduate student Mouhamadou Gueye and took its first lead of the game, 11-9. After just eight minutes of play, Hugley had eight points and three boards for the Panthers.
The Eagles regained the lead and stretched it to double-digits, leading 24-13 with 8:25 on the clock. Pitt again ran off eight-straight points to trail three (24-21) with 6:12 to play. Hugley scored all eight of the Panthers' points in the run.
Hugley – who finished 8-of-10 from the free throw line in the first half – made back-to-back from the charity stripe to tie the game at 26-26 with just over four minutes to play in the first. Boston College recaptured the lead, led by as much as seven (34-27) before Pitt closed it to a four-point, 36-32 gap at the buzzer.
The Eagles shot 54.5% from downtown (6-11) while the Panthers went 4-of-10 (40%). Both teams had 16 rebounds at the half. Hugley had 19 points, five boards and no fouls after 20 minutes of action.
Pitt took its first lead of the second half at the 14:53 mark as Hugley made a pair of free throws to lead 39-38. The Panthers extended their lead to eight points (50-44) with ten minutes left to play.
Boston College climbed back and eventually tied it at 56-56 at the 5:47 mark and after trailing by seven (64-57) tied it again at 64-64 with 1:37 on the clock.
The Panthers' free throw shooting came on full display down the stretch, making 5-of-6 free throws in the remaining minute and a half. Up 68-67 with 13 seconds left, Hugley made his second of two to put the Panthers up 69-67. After a 30 second timeout called by Head Coach Jeff Capel, the Eagles' Makai Ashton-Langford drove the length of the court and attempted a layup from the right block but missed, as Burton's defense prevented the basket and the Panthers survived yet another close contest.
Pitt finished the night with a 44.4% clip from the field (20-45) with a 42.9% mark from deep (6-14). Pitt shot 82.1% (23-28) from the free throw line with Hugley recording career-highs in both free throws made (15) and free throw attempts (20).
The Panthers head back on the road to face Syracuse Tuesday, Jan. 11. Start time is set for 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
