LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Pitt men's basketball team fell in yet another nail biter Wednesday evening at Louisville, 75-72, as Jamarius Burton's last second three-pointer fell short in a game that saw six ties, 16 lead changes and five total technical fouls.
Four Panthers scored in double-figures, including Burton with a game-high 21. Burton was a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe. Graduate student Mouhamadou Gueye finished with 15 points and three blocks, while sophomore John Hugley had 11 points and seven boards, all in the second half.
The first minute and 12 seconds of play included three technical fouls and four total fouls on Pitt (5-9, 0-3 ACC). Hugley was assessed a personal and technical foul and sat for the remainder of the first half due to foul trouble.
Louisville (10-4, 4-0 ACC) jumped out to an early lead and led by as much as six points (16-10) ten minutes in. The Panthers climbed back – due in part to a big first half from redshirt junior Ithiel Horton – and tied it at 21 all after a Horton three. The Cardinals regained the lead, led by as much as eight (30-22) before Pitt ended the half on a 10-5 run to trail 35-32 after the buzzer.
Horton led all scorers with 13 first half points with three three pointers as the Panthers shot 40% from the field (10-25) as a team. It was Horton's first game of 2021-22 following an off-court suspension earlier in the season.
The second half saw three ties through the first 10 minutes in a back-and-forth affair. Pitt earned its biggest lead of the night at the 8:31 mark, holding a 56-51 advantage. Both teams again traded the lead down the stretch until the Cardinals got up seven (72-65) with 47 seconds left.
Four consecutive free throws from Burton – all of which were made via two technical fouls on Louisville - cut the lead to three (72-69), but the Cardinals made two free throws of their own to go up five with 14 seconds to play. Burton connected from deep (74-72) and the Panthers fouled with five seconds to spare.
Louisville's Jarrod West made the first and missed the second, giving Pitt one last shot at a tie. Burton's three from the wing at the horn hit the front of the rim and the Panthers fell by three, the fifth-consecutive loss by less than five points.
Pitt shot 44.2% for the game (23-52) with a 33.3% mark from three (7-21). The Panthers eclipsed just over 70% from the free throw line (19-27).
The Panthers return home Saturday, Jan. 8 and host Boston College at 4 p.m. Live coverage will be held on the ACC Network.
