CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Pitt men's basketball team fell, 69-56, to Boston College at the Silvio O. Conte Forum Sunday afternoon.
The game, originally scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m., was moved to Sunday due to a powerful snowstorm in the Boston area. Head Coach Jeff Capel and assisted coach Jason Capel did not make the trip to Boston College due to COVID-19 protocols. Associate Head Coach Milan Brown served as acting head coach.
Sophomore Femi Odukale led the Panthers with 16 points and added five rebounds, two assists, one steal and a block to his line. Senior Jamarius Burton scored 15 points, while Ithiel Horton – who played in his second game of the season after his reinstatement to the program – had 11 points on 3-of-7 from three-point range.
Pitt (8-13, 3-7 ACC) opened the game on a 13-5 scoring run through the first media timeout, highlighted by resounding slam dunks from sophomore John Hugley and graduate student Mouhamadou Gueye. Boston College (9-11, 4-6 ACC) responded with an 11-1 run to take a 16-14 lead quickly out of the second media timeout.
Both teams traded baskets before the Panther offense stalled, going scoreless for 3 minutes and 45 seconds of gameplay. A Hugley free throw broke that trend with Pitt trailing 24-20 with five minutes on the clock but struggled to connect from the field as it trailed 31-22 at the break.
The Panthers shot 28.6% (8-28) from the floor with one made three on eight attempts in the first half.
Pitt's offense could not find a consistent rhythm early and trailed by double-digits for most of the second half. It finished 35.1% from the floor (20-57) and 11-of-19 (57.9%) from the free throw line.
Pitt stays on the road and travels to Winston-Salem to take on Wake Forest Wednesday, Feb. 2. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
