PITTSBURGH – The Pitt softball team will celebrate its 25th anniversary of collegiate competition at home Saturday, April 9. Pitt softball alumni and fans are invited to commemorate the milestone season as the Panthers take on preseason nationally-ranked Clemson at Vartabedian Field.
Tickets for the upcoming 2022 season are on sale now and can be purchased here.
"I am so grateful that the 2022 season marks a milestone in Pitt athletics and for the softball program," said Head Coach Jodi Hermanek. "This season, we are honoring 25 years of special women coming together to play the sport of softball that we all love. But bigger than that, we are celebrating the University of Pittsburgh promoting, supporting, and devotion to the sport of softball for 25 years and making Panther Softball such a special gift to these women."
The softball program began its inaugural season in 1998 as a member of the Big East before moving to the Atlantic Coast Conference in the fall of 2013. The 25th anniversary season sees the Panthers also host the ACC Championship for the first time in program history.
The Panthers return three All-ACC players from a year ago in senior Sarah Seamans (2nd Team), junior EC Taylor (3rd Team) and sophomore Cami Compson (3rd Team/Freshman Team).
Seamans finished fourth in the league in home runs (13), 12th in slugging % (.647) and 10th in RBI (35) a year ago. Taylor made an immediate impact in a Panther uniform with 27 stolen bases and a .63 stolen bases per game, ranked fourth and second in the ACC, respectively. She led the team with 45 hits and batted .315 while tallying 11 multi-hit games. Compson turned in an impressive 2021 campaign that saw her second in the conference in homers (11) among all freshman. She recorded 41 hits, 29 RBI and led the team with a 1.033 OPS.
Ten new Panthers join the squad for the upcoming season, including three transfers in senior Yvonne Whaley (Texas Tech), Kat Rodriguez (Quinnipiac) and Ally Muraskin (Jacksonville). Whaley led the Red Raiders with a .342 batting average with 50 hits and 15 RBI. Rodriguez also led Quinnipiac in batting average (.352) with 43 hits and 18 RBI. Muraskin, a right-handed pitcher who recently played fall ball with Jacksonville, has D1 experience previously at Florida International (2018-20) and competed on year at D2 USC-Beaufort in 2021.
Pitt opens the season Feb. 11 in Leesburg, Fla., in the Northern Lights Southern Nights against Michigan State. First pitch is a 10 a.m. with live coverage on FloSoftball.
