CLEMSON, S.C. – The Pitt men's basketball team fell, 75-48, Saturday evening at Littlejohn Coliseum.
Sophomore John Hugley had 15 points and eight rebounds while classmate Femi Odukale had 10 points, three boards and three assists. Senior Jamarius Burton scored 10 points and gathered seven rebounds before fouling out midway through the second half.
Clemson (11-8, 3-5 ACC) jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and led by seven into the first media timeout. Pitt (7-12, 2-6 ACC) saw itself down eight (15-7) before a 7-0 run made it a one point affair. Burton was a perfect 3-for-3 with a three pointer through the first 10 minutes of play.
The Panthers were a fingertip away from tying the game at 22 all, as Hugley's three-pointer was converted as time expired on the shot clock. After a lengthy review, the basket was deemed no good and Clemson went on a 7-0 run to lead by ten (29-19). The Tigers led 38-27 at the break.
Pitt made four threes in the first half – compared to Clemson's five – and shot 39.1% (9-23) from the field. Turnovers proved costly, as the Panthers had nine with the Tigers scoring 10 points off them.
Both teams came out firing in the second half, with the two school's combining for 17 points (Pitt 9, Clemson 8) through the first four minutes of action. Hugley, who had seven points in the first half, scored a quick six on 3-of-4 shooting to jumpstart the Panther offense.
After going 4-of-6 from the field early in the second half, Pitt's offense stalled and went without a field goal for nearly eight minutes. Burton picked up his fifth foul with 7:26 to play and the Panthers were unable to orchestrate a run and fell, 75-48.
Pitt shot 33% (16-48) from the field and out rebounded the Tigers 33-29. The Panthers totaled 20 turnovers, the second-highest amount on the season (at West Virginia).
Pitt returns home and hosts Syracuse Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. Live coverage will be held on the ACC Network.
