PITTSBURGH – After trailing in double-digits, the Pitt men's basketball team got within one possession but its comeback attempt fell short as it fell 66-61 to Virginia Wednesday evening from the Petersen Events Center.
Sophomore John Hugley scored a game-high 23 points and added seven rebounds. Senior Jamarius Burton had 12 points and four boards, while sophomore Femi Odukale recorded 10 points, three boards and three assists.
Both teams struggled to score through the first media timeout as Virginia (11-7, 5-3 ACC) led 4-3 after four minutes of play. Hugley provided a spark for Pitt (7-11, 2-5 ACC) early on, scoring eight of the team's first nine points. The Panthers took their first lead of the contest with 9:51 to play (12-10) and led by two (14-12) at the under eight media timeout.
After Virginia led 17-16, Pitt used a 6-0 run to lead 22-17 with just over three to play. The Cavaliers answered, registering 10 straight points to take their biggest lead of the game, 27-22. A Hugley and-1 conversion cut into the lead and the Panthers trailed by four, 29-25, at intermission.
Pitt ended the first half with a 50% clip (9-18) from the court and 75% (6-8) from the charity stripe. The Panthers recorded 10 turnovers in the first half with Virginia scoring 12 points off those turnovers.
Hugley and graduate student Mouhamadou Gueye sparked the Panther offense early in the second half, with the latter converting a dunk to tie it up at 31-31. The Cavaliers regained the lead and led as much as seven twice before Pitt got within one (45-44) with just over 10 minutes on the clock.
Virginia built a double-digit lead following the one point advantage and held Pitt at bay until the final two minutes of action when five-straight points from Odukale made it a three-point, 62-59 contest. The Hoos' Armaan Franklin converted a layup with 26.9 seconds left and a missed layup on the following Panther possession made it too little too late for the attempted comeback.
The Panthers finished 50% from the field (21-42), the second time this season with a 50% or higher field goal percentage (at West Virginia). Pitt outrebounded the Cavaliers 29-25 and shot 81.8% (18-22) from the free throw line.
Pitt is back on the floor Saturday, Jan. 22 at Clemson. Game time is set for 6 p.m. with live coverage on the ACC Network.
