Panthers Rebound, Earn Double-Digit Win over Louisville

PITTSBURGH – Four different Panthers scored in double-figures and the Pitt men's basketball team rebounded for a 65-53 victory over ACC opponent Louisville Saturday afternoon at the Pete.
Senior Jamarius Burton led the way with 20 points while recording eight rebounds and four assists. Sophomore John Hugley had 19 points and seven boards, graduate student Mouhamadou Gueye registered 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks and sophomore Femi Odukale had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Pitt (7-10, 2-4 ACC) opened up the game with an immediate and-1 conversion from Hugley 21 seconds in. Louisville (10-7, 4-3 ACC) responded with an 8-0 run before Pitt constructed a 5-0 run of its own to tie it 8-8 into the first media timeout.
The Panthers led by as much as six (17-11) in the first half before the Cardinals worked their way back to a 17-17 tie. Louisville took a five point advantage (22-17), capping off an 11-0 run over a span of three and a half minutes. Pitt fought its way back and eventually regained the lead and went into halftime with a four point, 28-24 lead.
Burton had 10 points and six rebounds in the first half to lead the way for the Panthers. Gueye had five points, three rebounds and two blocks as the Panthers shot 40.7% (11-27) as a team. Pitt was held to just six free throws in the first half. It entered the contest first in the ACC and fourth in the NCAA in free throw attempts per game (23.3).
Pitt never trailed in the second half and went into the first media timeout up six (34-28). The Panthers took their first double-digit lead of the game at the 12:57 mark (42-32) and led by as much as 16 (54-38) with just over seven to play. Consistent shooting from the Panthers – including a 46.4% clip in the second half alone – kept Pitt's double-digit lead the rest of the way.
The Panthers outscored the Cardinals 34-16 inside the paint while also out rebounding the opposition 41-32. The 12-point victory was the largest Pitt win over Louisville in the program's series history.
Pitt stays home and hosts Virginia Wednesday, Jan. 19. Start time is set for 9 p.m. on the ACC Network.
