Panthers Hold First Official Practice of 2021-22 Season

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's basketball team held its first official team practice of the 2021-22 season Thursday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center. Following Thursday's practice session, head coach Jeff Capel and the guard trio of Nike Sibande, Ithiel Horton and Jamarius Burton met with local media to discuss preparations for the upcoming season.
Pitt is 40 days out from its season opener Tuesday, Nov. 9 against The Citadel which will be followed by a trip to Morgantown, W.V. for the Backyard Brawl with West Virginia Friday, Nov. 12 (8:30 p.m. – ESPNU). Pitt's full 2021-22 schedule is available HERE.
The Panthers will also hold an open scrimmage at the Petersen Events Center Saturday, Oct. 9 (2 p.m.) as well as play an exhibition game against Gannon Monday, Nov. 1 in preparation for the 2021-22 season.
Season tickets are now on sale through the Panther Ticket Office. Mini-plan and single game tickets will go on sale at a later date.
The backcourt trio of Ithiel Horton (8.9 ppg., 43 3FG), Nike Sibande (6.9 ppg., .436 3FG Pct.) and Femi Odukale (6.6 ppg., 2.5 rpg., 2.2 apg.) lead a group of nine returning letterwinners for the Panthers. Joining Odukale from a talented freshman class a year ago are John Hugley (5.1 ppg., 4.3 rpg.), William Jeffress, Noah Collier and Max Amadasun.
Pitt's bolstered the size, experience and depth of the program with the offseason additions of Jamarius Burton, Mouhamadou Gueye and Dan Oladapo.
Burton (Wichita State/Texas Tech) is averaging 7.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game over 90 career contests (56 starts). Gueye (Stony Brook) averaged 9.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game and was named America East Defensive Player of the Year, while Oladapo (Oakland) posted 12.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game, while shooting 56.9 percent from the field last season.
JUCO transfer Chris Payton and prep school standout Nate Santos are also poised to compete for playing time early on for the Panthers.
