PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh has announced a multi-year contract for its women's lacrosse team to play their home games at Highmark Stadium. Pitt will have a dedicated and newly renovated locker room at the venue and will also practice at the facility throughout the fall and spring.
"Highmark Stadium will provide our program with one of best home venue experiences in the country," said head coach Emily Boissonneault. "In addition to the amazing view of the city from across the river, the facility is going to be a great place to watch college lacrosse with stadium seating, field level seating and elevated standing room spaces. Our fans will have easy access to the stadium with a great parking area that the lacrosse pregame tailgating community will appreciate. We are looking forward to launching our inaugural season of Pitt Lacrosse at Highmark Stadium."
Highmark Stadium, completed April 13, 2013 at a cost of $10.2 million, features a FIFA-certified synthetic turf field, a banquet area with a large balcony space overlooking the field and with sensational views of the Pittsburgh skyline, and a 2,200 square foot sports bar with an outstanding selection of food and drink offerings. The home of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC professional team and the new home of Pitt Lacrosse boasts a seating capacity of 5,000 people with additional standing room space for games.
Located at Station Square on Pittsburgh's South Shore and overlooking the city's downtown skyline from across the Monongahela River, Highmark Stadium is surrounded by a variety of restaurants, hotels and other amenities that add to the gameday atmosphere.
Director of Athletics Heather Lyke announced the addition of women's lacrosse as a varsity sport at Pitt Nov. 1, 2018 with Boissonneault named head coach of the Pitt Lacrosse program June 28, 2019. The program will play its inaugural season against NCAA Division I competition in the 2021-22 academic year.
