
No. 3 Pitt Opens Regular Season with 7-0 Win Over Duquesne

PITTSBURGH – The No. 3 Pitt men's soccer team shut out Duquesne at home, 7-0, in its first regular season match of the season.

Pitt struck in the 17th minute, as sophomore Filip Mirkovic lobbed a pass to Noel, who crossed it from right to left to Jacquesson inside the box for the goal.
The Panthers scored back-to-back goals two minutes a part, thanks to Petkovic who found the back of the net twice. Mort, a Greensburg, Pa., native, recorded assists on both goals to give Pitt a 3-0 advantage.
Pitt led, 7-3, in shots after the first 45 minutes while both teams had two corner kicks.
Three minutes in to the second half, Petkovic sent a cross into the box to Ordoñez, who headed it on goal for the fourth goal of the contest. Seven minutes later, in the 55th minute, Noel scored his first goal of the match as Petkovic sent a pass from right to left inside the box for the goal. Noel, who was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List earlier in the day, finished second in the nation in total goals with 14 a season ago.
Sena added to the lead with the sixth goal of the game in the 61st minute. After taking a cross from just outside the box, Sena made a shifty move to his left with the ball and struck it with his left foot for a goal in the upper left 90. Almeida scored the seventh and final goal in the 90th minute via a penalty kick.
The Panthers outshot the Dukes 16-4 for the night and led 9-3 in corner kicks. Graduate student goalkeeper Nico Campuzano earned the shutout, playing all 90 minutes in goal for his seventh career blank slate.
Pitt is back in action Monday, Aug. 30 on the road at West Virginia. Start time is set for 7 p.m. with coverage on ESPN+.

- The seven goals were the most since a 7-0 shutout victory at home against West Virginia Sept. 26, 2017.
- Junior Veljko Petkovic totaled two goals and two assists, totaling a career-high six points. The multi-goal effort was the fourth of his career.
- Redshirt sophomore Luke Mort tallied two assists, both of which were to Petkovic. It was the first multi-assist game of his career.
- Six different Panthers scored, including sophomore Bertin Jacquesson, senior Arturo Ordoñez, junior Valentin Noel, graduate student Sito Sena and senior Rodrigo Almeida.
