PITTSBURGH – The upcoming fall season will provide Pitt fans the opportunity to come on campus to watch three programs on the verge of establishing themselves among the ACC elite as well as national contenders in their respective sports. The Pitt men's soccer, women's soccer and volleyball teams combined to go 46-14 overall, including 26-10 in ACC play, with men's soccer reaching the College Cup, volleyball competing in the NCAA Elite Eight and women's soccer setting a school record for wins a year ago.
Pitt men's soccer returns 10 starters and 20 players in total from last year's squad that finished 16-4 overall and 9-1 in ACC play en route to its first ACC Coastal Division crown in school history. Headlining the returnees is junior Valentin Noel, a two-time All-American who was also named ACC Offensive Player of the Year last season. Noel was a finalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy award, given to college soccer's best male and female player of the year. Also returning for the Panthers is reigning ACC Defensive Player of the Year Jasper Löeffelsend, junior Veljko Petkovic, graduate student Alexander Dexter and 2020 ACC Freshman of the Year Bertin Jacquesson.
The Panthers begin regular season play Thursday, Aug. 26 at 8 p.m. against Duquesne at Ambrose Urbanic Field in a contest being televised on the ACC Network. Tickets for the upcoming season can be found HERE.
The Pitt women's soccer team is already off to a terrific start to the 2021 season with wins over Tulsa and No. 16 Oklahoma State in the BancFirst Cowgirl Soccer Invitational. The Panthers return all 11 starters from last year's team that set the program record for single-season wins (11) and earned its first-ever ranking in the United Soccer Coaches' Poll (No. 12). Highlighting the returners is Amanda West, the first Panther to be selected to the All-ACC Preseason Team and the program's all-time leaders in goals (25) and points (67) just 36 games into her career. West garnered Pitt's first All-ACC Second Team and United Soccer Coaches' All-Atlantic Region First Team honors after ranking third in the nation in points (33) and fifth in goals (13).
The Panthers open their home schedule Thursday, Aug. 26 against Cleveland State. Season and single-game tickets to see the women's soccer team at Ambrose Urbanic Field at the Petersen Sports Complex are available HERE.
Looking to build upon the program's first NCAA Elite Eight appearance, the Pitt volleyball team earned its highest preseason ranking in program history, coming in at No. 9 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Poll. The Panthers return all seven starters, including 98.1 percent of their kill output from last season. Two-time AVCA All-America Second Team selection Kayla Lund is back after making history as the ACC's first two-time Volleyball Player of the Year. Fellow All-American Chinaza Ndee returns after being named the ACC Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a Top 10 finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. Pitt stacked its deck this spring with exciting transfers Serena Gray (middle blocker, Penn State) and Leketor Member-Meneh (outside hitter, Missouri).
Fans will have their first opportunity to see the Panthers in action at Fitzgerald Field House when Pitt hosts the Panther Challenge Sept. 10-11. Season, single-match and group tickets – as well as special offers and promotions – are available HERE.
Beginning immediately, in coordination with Chartwells, the concessions stands at the Fitzgerald Field House and Petersen Sports Complex will begin selling beer, seltzer and wine during Pitt Athletics contests. The PSC and FFH will adopt similar implementation strategies and policies as those used at Heinz Field and the Petersen Events Center. The addition of this amenity will coincide with the implementation of appropriate safety measures for Pitt game days, ensuring the continuation of a fan and family friendly environment for all. A portion of the funds from alcohol sales proceeds will be dedicated to drug and alcohol education programs for the overall student body through Pitt's Division of Student Affairs.
Pitt is also instituting a clear bag policy for all venues this season.
