PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh assistant coach Haley Hicklen will compete in the Athletes Unlimited Pro Lacrosse league from July 23 – Aug. 22.
"I am excited and grateful to continue playing this season with Athletes Unlimited," said Hicklen. "We have a group of incredible athletes and people that make up this organization. This format will be a fun and exciting display of lacrosse. Through AU, I aim to inspire the next generation of strong female athletes and grow the game of lacrosse. In addition to every game being open to the public, streamed or televised, there is opportunity to engage through social media and the Athletes Unlimited app. This will allow the female lacrosse community to be more accessible and reach a larger audience."
Athletes Unlimited is launching its third league in lacrosse in the Metro DC area at Maureen Hendricks Field with the inaugural games July 23. The 56-player roster features several U.S. National Team members with founding players recruiting fellow pros and creating league rules to retain equity in the league.
Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse will play a short form, fast paced format consisting of eight-minute quarters, 9v9 gameplay and a 60-second shot clock all housed on an 80-yard by 50-yard playing field. Play will begin with draws at the beginning of each quarter as well as after every goal.
The top four players become captains each week and draft their teams from scratch for following week's games. In the Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse scoring system, every player can win or lose points during every game. Athletes score points as individuals and as a team to win MVP titles and cash bonuses.
"This season, every athlete has an opportunity to represent an organization that they care about," added Hicklen. "With that being said, I will be playing for the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to improving the lives of children battling pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers by pairing them with local teams, clubs and community groups. My goal is to bring awareness to FOJ and their mission so that every child in need finds a team to call home!"
Hicklen has also played in the Women's Professional Lacrosse League (WPLL) Brave out of Baltimore Maryland. Hicklen was drafted to the Brave in 2019 and appeared in five games as the team went of the capture the WPLL Championship title that year.
Prior to her professional career, Hicklen was a standout goalie at the University of Florida. While at Florida, Hicklen accumulated an impressive list of honors and awards, as well as records within the program. Hicklen was a three-time Tewaaraton nominee, IWLCA Second Team All-American, 2019 American Athletic Conference (AAC) Goalkeeper of the Year, two-time Big East Goalkeeper of the Year.
