PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh head coach Jeff Capel announced the signing of wing prospect Nate Santos Thursday morning.
"Nate is an exciting player with a knack for putting the ball in the basket," said Capel. "He has shown the ability to score at all three levels in a very good high school basketball league. We like his shooting ability, size and competitiveness. Nate's desire to be a terrific teammate and impact winning in any way possible will be a great addition to the culture we are building. We look forward to helping him continue to develop in our program."
Santos, a native of Geneva, Ill., averaged 17.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game en route to earning All-NEPSAC honors after leading The Loomis Chaffee School [Conn.] to a 20-6 record along with NEPSAC Class A and Founders League championships as a junior.
The Loomis Chaffee School only played three games this season before its season was halted due to COVID-19. Santos missed the AAU circuit prior to his junior year due to injury and last summer's AAU tour due to the pandemic.
A three-star recruit ranked in the top 250 in his class in 247 Sports' composite rankings, Santos is listed as the No. 2 prospect in Connecticut and No. 5 overall in New England. He was rated as high as No. 63 by 247Sports before sliding in the rankings following a torn ACL injury suffered during his sophomore year of high school and not playing on the AAU circuit in each of the past two summers.
In addition to Pitt, Santos held scholarship offers from Xavier, Creighton, Georgetown, Mississippi, Dayton, Virginia Tech, New Mexico and East Carolina, among others.
Santos' older brother, K.J., played collegiately at Illinois-Chicago and Missouri before beginning his professional career with Brujos de Guayama in Puerto Rico during the 2019-20 season.
