Women’s Track and Field, Baseball Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Nikki Scherer of women's track and field and Sky Duff of baseball were named the Office Depot/Supra Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Scherer, a senior, collected her first victory of the outdoor season on Friday afternoon for the track and field team at the Tennessee Relays as she notched the win in the 400m dash with a personal best time. Sher crossed the finish line in 53.75 seconds which marked the eighth best time in program history in the event and the third fastest time in the ACC this season. Scherer then ran the anchor leg of the Panthers 4x400m relay squad that collected a third-place finish with a season-best time of 3:42.74. The senior closed out her strong weekend with a fourth-place finish in the 200m dash with a season-best time of 24.24 seconds.
Duff was an important factor in the Pitt baseball team's win over rival West Virginia in addition to the program's first sweep of No. 15 Miami. Duff had a team-high 1.208 OPS and 11 hits and eight RBIs as well. With hits in all five games, including four multiple-hit games, Duff started with two that included a RBI-double against No. 12 Notre Dame. After racking up three hits against WVU, he did the same in the series-opener against Miami with a grand slam and double. He notched another RBI-double in the second game and had two more hits and RBIs plus a walk in the finale.
