PITTSBURGH—The man at the helm of the University of Pittsburgh wrestling program, Keith Gavin, was named 2021 ACC Wrestling Co-Coach of the Year, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Gavin, who recently led the Panthers to their best team finish at the NCAA Championships since 1970, shared the 2021 ACC Wrestling Coach of the Year award with NC State's Pat Popolizio after voting from the league's head coaches was tallied.
At the 2021 NCAA Wrestling Championships, Gavin's team was one of the biggest stories of the event as Pitt produced its best national tournament in decades.
All five of Pitt's NCAA qualifiers – Nino Bonaccorsi, Gregg Harvey, Cole Matthews, Micky Phillippi and Jake Wentzel – won at least one match in St. Louis. Bonaccorsi and Wentzel advanced to national finals in their respective weights, giving the Panthers multiple NCAA finalists for the first time since 1963.
Pitt finished with 40.5 team points to place 11th at the 2021 NCAA Wrestling Championships. The performance marked the most points scored by the Panthers at the national tournament under the current scoring format, while Pitt's overall finish was its best in 51 years.

Gavin becomes Pitt's fourth ACC Coach of the Year recipient in any sport and first since Dan Fisher won his second ACC Coach of the Year recognition in volleyball in 2018.

The Pitt wrestling program recently announced that NCAA finalist Jake Wentzel and NCAA qualifier Gregg Harvey will return for the 2021-22 campaign, meaning that all of Pitt's 2021 NCAA qualifiers are expected to be back at the Fitzgerald Field House next season.
