Gymnastics, Wrestling Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Jordan Ceccarini of gymnastics and wrestlers Nino Bonaccorsi and Jake Wentzel were named the Office Depot/Supra Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Ceccarini, a senior, tied her career-best score on floor exercise to earn a share of the event crown at the 2021 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championship hosted Saturday at the Petersen Events Center. Ceccarini's career high-tying 9.900 was good for a three-way title on floor, along with Kendall Whitman of George Washington and Faith Leary of Temple. Ceccarini is Pitt's first event champion since Brittany West won balance beam with a 9.900 at the 2017 EAGL Championship.
Bonaccorsi and Wentzel led Pitt's efforts at the 2021 NCAA Wrestling Championships and helped the Panthers produce their best performance at nationals in decades. Both Bonaccorsi and Wentzel reached the national championship match at 197 pounds and 165 pounds, respectively, giving Pitt multiple NCAA wrestling finalists for the first time since 1963. The points accumulated by the two Pittsburgh-area natives resulted in the Panthers finishing 11th in the nation – good enough for the program's best NCAA team finish since 1970.
Despite falling in their title matches in St. Louis, Bonaccorsi and Wentzel returned home with National Runner-Up trophies and as NCAA Wrestling All-Americans – Pitt's first since 2015.
