GREENSBORO, N.C. – Pitt swimming and diving wrapped up the NCAA Women's Championships as junior Amy Read and freshman Claire McDaniels competed in the preliminary platform diving event Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Read finished 27th with a five-round average score of 46.61 and total score of 233.05. In the previous two days, she came in 37th (256.5) in the 3-meter and 43rd (237.65) in the 1-meter.
"Amy had a solid NCAA's to compete on all three boards," said Pitt diving coach Katie Hazelton. "She scored more than 20 points on the 3-meter and platform than in 2019, displaying the hardwork she has put in and increase in her confidence."
McDaniels earned (212.80) 36th place in her first trip to the NCAA Championships.
"Claire did a great job competing as a freshman in an extremely competitive event," said Hazelton. "She held her own and has learned so much from her first year. She has a lot of potential, and I'm excited to see what she can achieve in the future."
The NCAA Championships wrap up a historic year for the Pitt women's diving squad. Read became the first women's diver to compete in all three diving events at the NCAA Championships and is just the third diver male or women to final in all three dives at the ACC Championships. She led the squad to 106 points at ACC's, the most-ever. With no seniors, each female diver is set to return.
"As a whole it is an extremely exciting time for our women's diving team," Hazelton said. "The depth and ability of our team is really strong not just in the pool but also the classroom. I couldn't be more proud of the whole team and how they push each other to strive for excellence."
McDaniels earned (212.80) 36th place in her first trip to the NCAA Championships.
The NCAA Men's Championships is held next week from Wednesday-Saturday as the Panthers have seven athletes participating: divers Dylan Reed (1-meter), Josh Parquet (1-meter) and Wesley Ahart (platform) and swimmers Cooper van der Laan (100 and 200 Breast and 200 Medley Relay), Blaise Vera (50 and 100 Free, 100 Fly and 200 Medley Relay), Stephen Hopta (200 Medley Relay) and Szymon Pytlarcyzk (200 Medley Relay).
