PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh sophomore forward Justin Champagnie received Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America recognition Tuesday. He is the first Panther to garner AP All-America attention since Ashton Gibbs and Brad Wanamaker were honorable mention selections following the 2010-11 season.
Champagnie, a first team All-ACC selection and runner-up for conference player of the year, finished the season as the lone major conference player averaging a double-double. The Brooklyn native delivered 18.0 points and 11.1 rebounds per game, while posting an ACC-best 14 double-double, including eight games with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds.
He scored in double figures in all 20 games played and had a pair of 20/20 games for the Panthers. Champagnie returned from a knee injury in mid-January to post a pair of signature games. He had 24 points and 16 rebounds in a home win over Syracuse Jan. 16 before posting 31 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks in a home win over Duke. He was 12-of-15 from the field, including 4-of-7 from the foul line, against the Blue Devils.
Champagnie posted consecutive 20/20 games at Northwestern and against Gardner-Webb to join Blake Griffin (Oklahoma) and Caleb Swanigan (Purdue) as the only major conference players in the past 25 seasons with back-to-back 20/20 games. With 20 points and 20 rebounds, while playing all 40 minutes in a 71-70 win at Northwestern, Champagnie joined Tim Duncan, Kevin Durant and Ben Simmons as the only major conference players in the past 25 years to accomplish that feat.
