Pitt Platform Divers, 400 IM Swimmers Excel on Friday at ACCs

GREENSBORO, N.C.—The University of Pittsburgh women's swimming and diving program produced stand-out performances in platform diving and the 400-yard individual medley on Friday at the 2021 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
The afternoon diving session resulted in all five Pitt women's divers in Greensboro scoring points for the Panthers in the event – the highest total in the conference.
That group was led by junior Amy Read, who qualified for the ACC championship final in women's platform diving for the second straight season and eventually finished sixth with a score of 265.05. Read became the third Pitt diver to compete for gold multiple times at the ACC meet, joining program greats Dominic Giordano and Meme Sharp in achieving that feat.
Also scoring for the Panthers on platform were freshmen Claire McDaniels (9th, 254.30) and Emma Gravgaard (14th, 223.95) as well as Meredith Gould (19th, 213.80) and Serena Buchwald (24th, 186.85). All five divers were recruited by Pitt diving coach Katie Hazelton and are eligible to return for multiple future seasons, giving the Panthers a lot to look forward to.
Pitt's talented swimming youth was also showcased on Friday as sophomore Daisy Anderson, who – like Read – hails from England, qualified for the consolation final in the 400-yard individual medley and posted her best ACC finish by taking 12th in 4:15.46. Senior Shahar Menahem also scored for the Panthers in the 400 IM by placing 20th in 4:19.43
The Panthers also added team points through Friday night's 400-yard medley relay of Kayla Graham, Kate Fuhrmann, Sophie Yendell and Madison Nalls, which took 10th with a time of 3:43.64.
Friday morning's preliminary swimming session was full of impressive swims by young Panthers as well.
Freshman Sophie Yendell, another Englishwoman, swam in the 100-yard butterfly (30th, 54.69) and continued to swim well at this meet. She was joined in the 100 Fly by fellow Panthers Kayla Graham (41st, 56.89), Jilian Schulte (43rd, 57.70) and Kathleen Lynch (44th, 58.98).
The 400-yard individual medley saw Pitt also represented by Genna Joyce (27th, 4:24.95), Jacqueline Tinneny (28th, 4:25.60) and Abby Grottle (4:29.33). Madison Nalls (25th, 1:49.49) and Abby Licht (1:53.57) competed in the 200-yard freestyle shortly after that.
Four Panthers swam in both the 100-yard breaststroke – Kate Fuhrmann (31st, 1:03.14), Tatum Detwiler (33rd, 1:03.51), Anneliese Hohm (35th, 1:03.68) and Genna Joyce (38th, 1:04.13) – and the 100-yard backstroke – Kayla Graham (32nd, 55.78), Kathleen Lynch (42nd, 59.24), Afrodite Agathokleous (43rd, 59.63) and Emma Wilson (43rd, 59.63).
Pitt's men's divers and women's swimmers conclude their week at the ACC Championships on Saturday, with prelims set for 11 a.m. Men's platform diving finals will be held at 3 p.m. before a total of six women's swimming finals begin at 7 p.m.
The entire 2021 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships, including prelims and finals, will be broadcast via ACC Network Extra and the WatchESPN app.
