Grottle, Divers Tally Points for Pitt at the ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Five University of Pittsburgh student-athletes scored points for the Panthers during Thursday's full day of action at the 2021 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Divers Amy Read and Dylan Reed placed for the second consecutive day as the junior women's diver took 15th on 1-meter springboard with a points total of 261.70, while the sophomore men's diver finished 19th on 3-meter springboard with a score of 303.80.
Additionally, freshman Emma Gravgaard tallied team points in her ACC Championships debut by placing 20th with a score of 253.75 and junior Serena Buchwald was right behind her in 21st with 253.50 points after six dives.
Also representing the Panthers in springboard diving on Thursday, freshmen Jackson Salisbury (26th, 280.75) and Nate Keller (30th, 272.30) nearly added to Pitt's tally on men's 3-meter, while freshman Claire McDaniels (28th, 224.35) and sophomore Meredith Gould (32nd, 212.90) did likewise on 1-meter.
Another freshman, swimmer Abby Grottle, furthered showcased Pitt's excellent young talent by becoming an ACC Championships finalist in her debut in Greensboro. Grottle finished 23rd with a finals time of 4:49.76 in the 500-yard freestyle after qualifying for the C Final by placing 20th in the preliminary session in 4:49.26.
Pitt's third relay of the meet, the women's 200-yard freestyle relay, produced a great swim to finish up the day's action. The Panthers' relay comprised of Sophie Yendell, Kate Fuhrmann, Tatum Detwiler and Emma Wilson finished seventh in the event with a time of 1:30.72. Yendell's opening 50-yard freestyle split of 22.78 to lead off the race threatened the Pitt school record in the event that's stood since 2016.
Also swimming for the Panthers on Thursday, juniors Madison Nalls (27th, 4:51.95) and Jacqueline Tinneny (29th, 4:52.79) finished just outside the finals in the 500-yard freestyle. Freshman Abby Licht (38th, 4:57.17) also made a strong debut at the conference meet.
Senior Shahar Menahem (34th, 2:02.20) and freshman Anneliese Hohm (55th, 2:07.40) competed well in the 200-yard individual medley, while freshman Sophie Yendell (27th, 22.98), sophomore Kate Fuhrmann (37th, 23.19), sophomore Tatum Detwiler (45th, 23.57), sophomore Emma Wilson (23.62), freshman Afrodite Agathokleous (68th, 24.89) and sophomore Jilian Schulte (69th, 24.96) participated in the 50-yard freestyle prelims.
Pitt's divers and women's swimmers face another full day of action Friday at the ACC Championships, with prelims set for 11 a.m. Women's platform diving finals will be held at 2 p.m. before a total of six women's swimming finals begin at 7 p.m.
The entire 2021 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships, including prelims and finals, will be broadcast via ACC Network Extra and the WatchESPN app.
