PITTSBURGH – Graduate student Jasper Löeffelsend was named a national semifinalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy award, as announced today by United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletic Club.
A Cologne, Germany, native, Löeffelsend is making his second appearance as semifinalist, doing so last season during Pitt's historic College Cup run. He is the first Pitt player in program history to be named a semifinalist twice in his career.
Regarded as the toughest soccer conference to play in, Löeffelsend was named Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year Nov. 10 for the second consecutive season. He became the first back-to-back DPOTY since Ike Opara from Wake Forest (2008-09).
Löeffelsend finished the 2020-21 campaign as one of the best passers in the country and kept that status during the 2021 season, a year in which Pitt made the NCAA Quarterfinal round for the second-straight season. As of writing (Dec. 7), he is 18th in the country in total assists with nine, a mark that is also second in the conference. His assists per game (0.53) also rank 14th nationally and second in the league.
The right-back finished the 2021 campaign with two goals, 9 assists and 11 shots in 17 games played. Löeffelsend scored for the first time in his career Oct. 25 at home versus UMass, registering a brace in Pitt's 5-1 victory.
Three men's finalists will be named for the award on Wednesday, Dec. 15. The 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Jan. 7, 2022 to formally announce this year's winners. Löeffelsend seeks to become the second Panther in program history to be named a finalist as Valentin Noel was named one last season.
