Pitt Drop Nail Biter to Notre Dame, 68-67

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men's basketball suffered its third one-point loss of the season Tuesday evening to Notre Dame, falling 68-67 in its conference home opener at the Petersen Events Center.
Sophomore John Hugley led all scorers with 18 points and added six rebounds, three assists and three steals to his stat line. Senior Jamarius Burton scored 15 with four rebounds and two steals, while graduate student Mouhamadou Gueye and sophomore Femi Odukale posted double-figure scoring nights with 14 and 13, respectively.
Pitt (5-8, 0-2 ACC) held an 11-10 advantage after the second media timeout with 11:10 to play in the first as four different Panthers got in the scoring column. Notre Dame (7-5, 1-1 ACC) took the lead and led by as much as five (24-19) before Pitt outscored the Fighting Irish 11-6 in the remaining six minutes of the half to tie it up at 30-30 after 20 minutes.
Both Odukale and Gueye had nine points at intermission with Gueye hitting both of Pitt's two three-pointers of the half. Both teams shot above the 40% threshold while Notre Dame led 17-10 in the rebounding battle.
After Dane Goodwin hit a three-pointer for the Fighting Irish, Pitt went on a 9-0 run to take a 39-33 lead early in the second. The Panthers held the lead from the 17 minute mark until under six to play, leading by as much eight points three separate times. Notre Dame climbed back and eventually tied the contest at 55-55 with 5:21 left in regulation.
A Goodwin three put Notre Dame up four (61-57) with 3:13 to play. Hugley answered with an and-one off a converted layup and the Panthers trailed by one with just under three on the clock. Both teams traded baskets down the stretch in the final minutes and the Panthers regained the lead, 67-66, after a made Odukale jumper.
Odukale, who was fouled on his made jumper, missed the free throw and Notre Dame's Prentiss Hubb converted a jumper of his own with five seconds to spare to put the Fighting Irish up one (68-67). Burton took the inbound pass the length of the floor and attempted a jumper from just inside the right elbow but missed and the Fighting Irish gathered the rebound with less than a second left.
Pitt shot 45.1% from the field (23-51) with a 35.7% mark from three (5-14). Notre Dame out-rebounded the Panthers 32-26, making it the first game all season Pitt was out-rebounded.
The Panthers are back on the court Saturday, Jan. 1 at Virginia Tech. Start time is set for 4 p.m. on ESPNU.
