Panthers Fall to Monmouth at Home

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men's basketball team's late second half push was not enough as the Panthers fell to Monmouth, 56-52, Sunday evening at the Petersen Events Center.
Senior Jamarius Burton led the Panthers with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Sophomore John Hugley totaled a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while classmate Femi Odukale had 14 points and five boards.
Monmouth (8-2) opened the game on a 9-2 run that ran into the first media timeout. The Hawks extended the lead to double-digits and finished the first half with their largest lead of the half, 36-19.
Hugley had eight points and five rebounds after 20 minutes of play. As a team, Pitt shot 22.2% (6-27) from the field and 0-7 from three. Monmouth shot 48.1% (13-27) from the field including 45.5% from deep, with George Papas making four.
The Hawks led by as many as 19 two different times in the opening five and half minutes of the second half and led 44-25 at the 14:51 mark. The Panthers chipped away and recorded an 11-2 run and got it within single-digits (46-37).
After Monmouth got the lead back to 14 (51-37), the Panthers again went on an 11-2 run over the stretch of five minutes to cut it to a five point, 53-48 game. Pitt got within one possession after a Burton pull-up jumper made it a 55-52 contest with 28 seconds left. The Panthers, sitting at four fouls for the half, fouled three times in the ensuing seconds and sent Papas to the free throw line for a one-and-one with seven seconds on the clock. Papas made one of two to seal the victory for the Hawks.
Pitt shot 34% for the game (17-50) including 47.8% (11-23) in the second half. The Panthers doubled the amount of makes at the charity stripe, making 16-of-23 opposed to Monmouth's 8-of-12.
The Panthers conclude the Gotham Classic in Madison Square Garden against St. John's Saturday, Dec. 18. Start time is set for 12 p.m. with live coverage on FS1.
